Gregg County Black History Program 2-1-13

When: Friday, February 1, 2013 at 6 pm
Where: Gregg County Historical Museum in downtown Longview, 214 North Fredonia Street
Theme: African Americans in Public Services

The Gregg County Historical Museum is proud to present for Black History Month; an exhibit called "African Americans in Public Services" The Black History Month exhibit will highlight the men of women of Gregg County who served as firefighters, law enforcement and in other public service positions. The exhibit will show current employees in the public sector and also show the changes which have occured since African Americans were first allowed to be hired into these positions. Vistors to the Gregg County Historical Museum will be able to learn the rich history Of African Americans who served in the Public Sector through photos, archives, and biographical information.

This exhibit runs February 1st to the 28th and is free to the public.

Longview Unity Honors 1-31-13

Location: Maude Cobb Convention and Activity Complex, 100 Grand Blvd.

The purpose of the Unity Honors are to credit individuals in the Longview community who have stood against prejudice and mistrust and who have demonstrated leadership in promoting racial harmony and understanding.

The honorees this year are Andrea Mayo and Cissy Ward. Honorable Mentions will go to Super 1 Foods and NAACP President Branden D. Johnson.

Unity Honors Luncheon tickets are $10 and are available through January 23, 2013. Tickets may be purchased at Partners in Prevention, 140 E. Tyler St, #400; Broughton Recreation Center, 801 MLK Blvd.; Barron’s Bookstore, 405 W. Loop 281, Pine Tree Administration Office, 1701 Pine Tree Road; Longview ISD Administration Office, 1301 E. Young St; and Johnny Cace’s Seafood and Steak House, 1501 E. Marshall Avenue. Tables can be purchased for $100 by calling the Partners In Prevention Office. No tickets will be available on the day of the luncheon. Lunch will be catered by Johnny Cace’s Seafood and Steakhouse. Anissa Centers will emcee the luncheon.

Unity Honorees Selected for 2013

Unity Honors Recipients: Andrea Mayo and Cissy Ward

(Longview, TX) The City of Longview Partners in Prevention’s Unity and Diversity Committee has announced Andrea Mayo and Cissy Ward as the 2013 Unity Honors recipients. The Unity Honors Luncheon honors persons who have been leaders in the pursuit of racial equality and have helped improve race relations in the community. The Unity Honors Luncheon will be held on Thursday, January 31, 2013.

A Louisiana native, Andrea Mayo has provided 34 years of service to the Longview Independent School District, where she currently serves as the Deputy Superintendent. In addition, she has also served her community through active volunteering with the Zonta Club of Longview, Longview Habitat for Humanity, ARC of Gregg County, Campfire, Longview Economic Develop Corporation, East Texas Workforce, ArtsView Children’s Theatre and the Martin Luther King Celebration planning committee. She is a faithful member of the Galilee Baptist Church. She has been honored by various community organizations and groups for her work.



Cissy Ward is a lifelong Texas resident and has worked as the Coordinator of Community Services at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church and as the Executive Director at East Texas Literacy Council. Ward is perhaps best known for her dedication to volunteer services in the community, as this has proven her true vocation. She served on the organizing board for: Longview Habitat for Humanity, Longview Community Ministries, Longview Women’s Commission, LISD Foundation, and East Texas Literacy Council, where she served as the first Executive Director. Ward was paramount in the organization of the Race Relations Committee (currently known as the Unity and Diversity Committee. She is a faithful member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church.

In addition, business service recognition awards will be presented to Super 1 Foods. An individual service recognition award will be presented to Branden Johnson.

MLK Citywide Celebration Includes Parade, Concerts, and More


(Longview, TX) In honor of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., The MLK Planning Committee, the City of Longview, and other community sponsors present the annual MLK Citywide Celebration with events planned leading up to Monday, January 21. Under the theme “The Dream, From the Community to the World,” several events have been planned including a banquet, essay contest, art contest, jazz concert, parade, festival, humanitarian celebration, worship service, and a memorial march.

According to Community Services Coordinator Dietrich Johnson, “As, always, the City of Longview is proud to be a part of this significant celebration. These events coming together are great examples of Dr. King’s legacy A diverse group of volunteers from throughout the community working together to make it all happen hand in hand.”

To register for the MLK Parade, please contact the Broughton Recreation Center at 903-237-1276. There is a $5.00 registration fee to participate in the parade.

Please note that City offices will be closed on Monday, January 21, in observance Martin Luther King, Jr. Day; however, the Sanitation Division will collect trash as normal.
